If you've admired Olympic skiers like Lindsey Vonn you might just be thinking that you'd enjoy learning how to ski. The different types of skiing include "downhill, cross-country, and freestyle." Freestyle is an exciting, individualized type of skiing for the more advanced skier and most young people start out by taking lessons in downhill or cross-country. Learning how to ski can be accomplished "in as little as an afternoon." You'll read about the basics of skiing, what the different types of skiing are, you'll learn how to select the proper equipment, the elements or parts of the skis, the other "equipment" you'll need, you'll learn a bit of skiing lingo, and you'll get a chance to read about the different types of competitions you may one day enter. However, while you are dreaming about winning the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup, the FIS World Championships, or snagging the gold in the Winter Olympic games, you just might want to practice ... a lot!Skiing wasn't always a sport, but rather historically "it was a necessity." Hunters used them to travel across the snows in order to chase prey to supply their families with meat. Different of snow demanded the creation of an assortment of skis. By the 1700s the Scandinavian countries began cross-country races. In 1863 sixteen-year-old Ingrid Olsdatter Vestbyen was the first woman who was recorded in a ski race. By 1891 women were officially "asked to participate for the first time" in an actual competition even though they raced separately from the men. You will read about the evolution of the sport and get to meet several of its notable participants (both skiers and boarders), especially in the latter part of the book as they get out there and win.For those who find snowboarding appealing, they will first be introduced to Lindsey Jacobellis, who "is considered one of the best snowboard cross riders in the world." Once again, you'll learn the basics of the sport, "snowboarding lingo," you'll learn how to select the proper snowboard, its basic elements, and you'll learn how to dress properly. The professional competitions for women include the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships and The Winter X Games. Similarly to skiing, some prehistoric people "used a single board that is a distant relative of the modern snowboard" for travel. You'll get to meet people like Sherman Poppen, his Snurfer, and those inventive people who came after him in their quest to find the best snowboard. You'll learn about the half-pipe, how competitions came into being, how the sport went international, how women became involved, you'll learn about special boards made just for women, and you'll get to meet some of the pros. This is an excellent, concise overview of the history and women of skiing and snowboarding. It's a tall order to write about both sports in one book, but it was very well done and proved to be of high interest and was blended quite nicely. I especially enjoyed the mini-portraits of several historical and current greats in both sports. The "invention" of the modern snowboard was perhaps more accurate and detailed in this book than in others in that it cited more than one inventor rather than focusing solely on Jake Burton. The numerous informative sidebars were well placed and did not interfere with the flow of the book. The added interesting information such as the description of different types of snowboard tricks and a fascinating description of the historical origin of the Birkebeiner Race. This is one in the series, "girls play to win." There are numerous photographs of snowboarders, skiers, and high interest shots of stars in action. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional book, and web site resources to explore.
